It is essential that you understand who it is that is suffering. What is happening to you right now is your only reality and you cannot do a single thing to change it. You are not responsible for it and no amount of personal effort can help. There are reasons for this. First, your mind, the one that you identify with, is not your personal mind. Your mind actually exists outside of you. Your mind is just your thoughts. If there are no thoughts, there is no mind. Your thoughts are not yours. They can originate from any possible source. They can come from your genes, your birth or childhood traumas, the weather and/or from the thoughts of any of the 6 billion people alive today. They can even come from those who have long since departed. Your mind is just a pipe. Your mind receives thoughts. So you are not the source of your own thoughts. You are just the experiencer. Your mind has no relationship to "you". Thoughts and the mind are an ancient construct. They will always exist as a part of your experience. No amount of effort can ever eradicate them. Second, your body, the one that you experience through, is not yours. The heart beats, the lungs fill, the cells repair themselves, and the baby is created completely independently of your conscious attention. The body acts autonomously. It is not yours.
So if you are not your mind, your thoughts or your body, then, who are you? You might reply that you are the person who is reading this. But if you read this again tomorrow, would the same person be reading it? Do you always have the same point of view? Is there a common thread holding these points of view or these personalities together? The answer is no. The truth is that we are a bunch of individual personalities that rise up and then recede seamlessly into the next one. We have no core personality. Rather, we are many fluid personalities.
If I am not my thoughts, my mind, my body or a fixed personality, who am I? If I am just a bunch of personalities which come and go like the wind, who is left? Who is experiencing? Who is going to have goals and roles? Who is driven to achieve more and more? How can growth be measured without a fixed identity that experiences change?
And who gets Awakened? My thoughts and my mind cannot be Awakened. My body is not me. It cannot participate in my Awakening. My personality is actually made up of many, many fluid personalities which have no common thread. How do I go about Awakening an infinite number of personalities? I can’t even Awaken one of them.
The truth is that there is no me. I am just experience. I own nothing and this world is happening without any rhyme or reason. Who gets Awakened? There is no “who”, therefore, there is no one to get Awakened. There is no identity to liberate. No human effort can be used to liberate us from what was never there to begin with.
